Welcome to the Deerfield Teachers' Center of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and Memorial Hall Museum, in Deerfield, Massachusetts. We offer professional development programs and resources to support the teaching of American history.
Civic Reflections: Picturing America and the Changing Face of American Democracy
This free professional development program for teachers is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Central to the Civic Reflections project was the 3-day teacher professional development held at the Deerfield Teachers' Center and area art museums in July, 2011. The participating teachers are now receiving the "Picture This" in-class program and are creating lessons using images from the Picturing America Gallery. The Deerfield Teachers' Center:
- Offers a variety of professional development programs, provides professional development points (PDPs) necessary for teacher recertification, and provides courses for Master's level credits. In addition to workshops and graduate level courses, the Center provides consultations with 'Museum Resource Educators,' and assistance to teachers in their research.
- Provides multi-disciplinary study and training in American history and related social studies, including teacher use of historic artifacts and documents in the classroom.
- Encourages the integration into classroom teaching of high quality websites (many of which deliver primary sources to the classroom) including Memorial Hall's American Centuries website, the Raid on Deerfield: The Many Stories of 1704 website, and the Shays' Rebellion and the Making of a Nation website. These sites feature web-based lessons and activities by and for teachers.
- Houses a lending library of teaching resources, a bank of computers for teacher use, and a setting where educators can participate in educational offerings and explore new resources. Find out more here.
